Food safety concerns uncovered at Lami bakeries

A joint inspection by the Consumer Council of Fiji and officials from the Lami Town Council has uncovered serious food safety concerns at several bakeries.The Council says the inspections were conducted on Monday to check whether bakeries were complying with food safety, hygiene and consumer protection requirements.

It says inspectors found uncovered bread, cream and baking ingredients, as well as unclean baking trays, dust, dirt and cobwebs on the premises.At one bakery, inspectors found flies and a cat inside, along with a cat litter box on the premises.Inspectors also found a worker using a rag as a glove when handling bread taken from the oven.

Price control violations were also identified during the inspections.The Council says bakeries must maintain proper hygiene and safe food handling practices to protect consumers.It is also encouraging consumers to report any concerns about food safety, hygiene or pricing.
