A gas explosion at a coal mine in China’s northern province of Shanxi has reportedly killed at least 90 people.

Official news agency, Xinhua says the accident at Changzhi city’s Liushenyu coal mine happened on Friday evening, where about 247 workers were on duty at the time of the explosion.

Xinhua had initially reported early on Saturday that eight people were killed and 38 were trapped underground.

The agency later said nine people were still trapped as of yesterday afternoon.

Xinhua reported that the cause of the explosion is under investigation, while rescue efforts continue.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for an all-out effort to rescue those missing and ordered an investigation into the cause of the accident, while holding those responsible accountable.
