A Seaqaqa cane farmer is demanding answers on when she will receive the lease to her land after paying the lease premium, saying she needs it to start planting cane.
Speaking during the Special Committee on the Sugar Industry's public consultation, Sheila Wati says she wants to plant cane but is helpless without the lease.
Wati also questioned why there is a shortage of sugar in Seaqaqa.
The cane farmer says it is concerning that cane farmers are having to go from shop to shop just to buy a kilogram of sugar.
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka, who is also the Chair of the Special Committee, requested the Fiji Sugar Corporation Chief Executive Officer to take her details so that a response could be provided later.
Meanwhile, Minister for Agriculture and Sugar Tomasi Tunabuna confirmed to fijivillage News that there is currently no shortage of raw sugar, with the Fiji Sugar Corporation confirming that supermarkets have stock available as the sugar mills increase production to improve local supply.
Further questions have been sent to FSC and the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission.
Questions have also been sent to the iTaukei Land Trust Board regarding the lease issue.
