The Republic of Fiji Military Forces (RFMF) has raised concerns about broader aspects of the Constitution Review Commission Report, including the proposed immunity provisions and their implications for institutional accountability and Fiji’s future stability.

RFMF Commander Ro Jone Kalouniwai met with Solicitor-General Ropate Green at the RFMF Headquarters to discuss key aspects of the report relating to the military.

The RFMF says the discussions focused on the proposed constitutional role of the Force, potential amendments to the RFMF Act and the modernisation of its military justice system.

Among the key matters discussed was the proposed establishment of a Military Court to replace the current ad hoc General Court Martial system, along with the establishment of an independent Director of Military Prosecutions.

The RFMF says the proposed reforms aim to strengthen accountability, judicial independence and the protection of service members’ rights, while preserving the discipline, command structure and professionalism required of an effective military force.

It adds that the discussions provided an opportunity for constructive engagement and legal clarification, helping the Force better understand the proposed constitutional and legislative reforms and their potential implications.

The RFMF says the engagement reflects its commitment to the rule of law and constitutional supremacy, while supporting a professional and informed contribution to the constitutional review process in the interests of the people of Fiji.
