Paraguay has produced one of the biggest upsets of the FIFA World Cup, knocking four-time champions Germany out of the tournament with a dramatic 4-3 penalty shootout victory after the match finished 1-all following extra time.

Julio Enciso gave Paraguay the lead just before halftime with a 42nd-minute strike before Kai Havertz levelled the scores for Germany in the 54th minute.

Despite dominating possession for long periods and creating several chances, Germany could not find a winner in either normal time or extra time, forcing the match into penalties.

Paraguay held their nerve in the shootout, converting four spot-kicks to seal a famous victory and spark jubilant celebrations from the players and fans.

The result sees Paraguay advance to the Round of 16, while Germany suffers one of the most disappointing exits in the nation's football history.

It is also the first time Germany has lost a penalty shootout at the FIFA World Cup finals, ending a reputation built on decades of shootout success.

Germany was playing in its 21st FIFA World Cup, extending its record as one of the tournament's most successful nations with four World Cup titles in 1954, 1974, 1990 and 2014.

For Paraguay, this is their 9th FIFA World Cup appearance and one of the greatest victories in the country's football history as they progress to the last 16.

Paraguay will now look to continue their dream run when they take on the winner of the France and Sweden Round of 32 clash.

In other matches, Brazil advanced into the last 16 with a dramatic 2-1 victory over Japan.

Meanwhile the Netherlands will take on Morocco at 1pm.
