Moana remake branded ‘flat’, ‘dull’ and ‘dismal’ by critics

Disney's live-action remake of Moana has been branded "flat", "dull" and "dismal" by critics, with many questioning the need to remake one of the studio's most successful animated films.

Released on Friday, the film stars 19-year-old Australian-Samoan actress Catherine Laga'aia as Moana, while Dwayne Johnson reprises his role as the demigod Maui.

Reviewers criticised the remake for its heavy use of CGI, lack of originality and failure to capture the magic of the 2016 animated hit.

The Guardian called it a "competent but pointless" remake, while The Independent described it as "a waste of everyone's time and talent".

The Times labelled it "a lazy cash grab for shareholders", and The Telegraph said it "could have been made by a ChatGPT prompt".

However, not all reviews were negative.

Variety praised the film for recapturing the beauty and charm of the original, while The Hollywood Reporter described it as "captivating family entertainment" with stunning visuals.

The remake is the latest in Disney's series of live-action adaptations, following the box office success of Lilo & Stitch after the commercial disappointment of Snow White.
