Vodafone Fiji Bulikula player Taina Naividi is determined to make Fiji proud as the team prepares to face Australia in the Women's Rugby League World Cup semi-final, after overcoming a second ACL injury that nearly ended her World Cup dream.
The 25-year-old ruptured her anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) for the second time just days before the 2025 NRLW grand final, forcing her to miss the decider and undergo another lengthy rehabilitation.
Despite the setback, Naividi remained focused on representing Fiji at the World Cup, using that dream as motivation throughout her recovery.
Her hard work and determination saw her return to the field in Round 5 of the NRLW season this year, and she is now part of the first Fiji women's team to reach the World Cup semi-finals.
Naividi says representing Fiji means much more than playing rugby league, as the team is also carrying the hopes of young girls and children who dream of having the same opportunity.
She says the sacrifices made by their parents and grandparents have also played an important role in helping the players reach this stage.
Having made her international debut in 2024 and played 31 NRLW matches, Naividi has taken on a greater leadership role within the Bulikula squad.
She admits the responsibility was challenging at first but says she has been able to apply the lessons learned from experienced leaders at her NRLW club.
Naividi says the players have adapted well to the coaching style and developed a strong bond despite coming from different backgrounds.
Looking ahead to the semi-final against Australia, Naividi says she expects a tough challenge from the Jillaroos, who have several of her Sydney Roosters teammates, including Isabelle Kelly, Jess Sergis and Tarryn Aiken.
She says the Australian players are explosive and highly skilled, but she is excited about the opportunity to face them.
Naividi says the Bulikula must focus on their preparation, get the small details right and stick to their game plan if they are to challenge the defending champions.
Fiji will also look to build on their courageous performance against the Kiwi Ferns, whom they pushed all the way before losing 18-12 in their opening World Cup match.
Naividi says she is grateful for the support the team has received and hopes their historic campaign will inspire more young girls in Fiji to pursue rugby league.
The Bulikula take on the Jillaroos at 6.45pm Sunday at Allianz Stadium, Sydney.
