Fiji must address inequality, drugs and HIV alongside immunity debate – Tui Nayau

Fiji cannot achieve lasting reconciliation by addressing immunity alone while economic inequality, drug-related problems and HIV continue to affect communities across the country.

Tui Nayau Ratu Tevita Lutunauga Kapaiwai Uluilakeba Mara says reconciliation requires more than changes to the law, and must also address the social and economic challenges facing Fijians.

Speaking on the public consultations on the Constitution Amendment Bill, Ratu Tevita says he respects the Supreme Court's opinion on immunity, but believes the country must also confront the deeper issues that have contributed to social tensions.

He says many iTaukei families are still struggling to benefit from Fiji's economy, 56 years after the country gained independence.

Ratu Tevita says these economic concerns were among the issues exploited during the political upheavals of 1987 and 2000.

He stresses that taking power by force can never be justified, but says the underlying problems that were exploited during those periods must also be addressed if Fiji is to achieve lasting reconciliation.

Ratu Tevita also raised concerns about the impact of drugs and HIV on young people and communities, saying the vanua, churches, families and Government must work together to address these challenges.

He says national unity also requires respect, understanding and responsible leadership.

The Tui Nayau condemned threatening social media comments directed at people who criticised chiefs, saying Fiji's traditional leaders do not need to be defended through threats or intimidation.

He says while people should respect Fiji's chiefs and traditional institutions, criticism and disrespect should be answered with dignity rather than threats.

Ratu Tevita also stressed that Indo-Fijians, descendants of the girmitiya and every community that calls Fiji home belong to the country.

He welcomed recent comments by RFMF Commander Major General Ro Jone Kalouniwai that the people's vote must be protected and respected.

Ratu Tevita says Fiji now needs leaders at every level to use words that bring people together, address the challenges facing communities and find a common path towards national unity.
