Residents of Caubati in Nasinu can expect better waste management after the opening of the US$30,000 Caubati Resource Recovery Facility today.

Minister for Local Government, Premila Kumar says this project is in line with the government’s vision to turn waste into resource, and will not only manage waste but also create economic opportunities for residents in Nasinu.

Kumar says Nasinu is the second most populated area after Suva, and Nasinu Town Council’s current garbage collection services are running at a loss.

Caubati resident, Mani Ram says this project is a timely assistance to help residents manage their waste and earn as they can also sell recyclable waste to recycling companies.

The project is supported by the Commonwealth Local Government Forum and funded by United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific.

Commonwealth Local Government Forum Regional Director, Karibaiti Taoaba urges stakeholders and individual citizens to work together to achieve the overall expectation of this project.

Another resource recovery facility is expected to open in Makoi in April.
