Digicel Fiji launches 5G network in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka

Digicel Fiji launches 5G network in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka

Good news for the people of Fiji as Digicel Fiji has launched its 5G network in Suva, Nadi and Lautoka, placing customers with compatible devices at the forefront of Fiji’s digital evolution.

In a statement, Digicel Fiji says that in 5G coverage areas, customers with compatible devices will be able to access faster speeds than 4G, enabling superior streaming, quicker downloads, and an enhanced gaming experience.

They add that Apple and Samsung mobile devices will not immediately connect to the Digicel Fiji 5G network, as these smartphones require software updates from the manufacturers to enable 5G functionality.

This process involves testing and certification for compatibility and performance and customers will be notified once certification is received from Apple and Samsung.

Digicel Fiji CEO, Farid Mohammed says they are proud to launch 5G in Fiji, unlocking a new dimension of potential for customers.

Mohammed says this is not just a speed upgrade, but a fundamental shift – empowering Fijians with seamless, immersive experiences that will transform how they live, work, and connect.

He further says that they are not just opening a new chapter, but writing a new, exhilarating story of possibilities, and are committed to giving Fijians access to this game-changing technology.

The CEO says this is just the beginning, with plans to expand 5G across major population centres in Fiji, bringing this incredible technology to more people.

Initial test results at the new Digicel Fiji 5G sites showed average speeds of 600–700 Mbps, with the full potential reaching up to 1 Gbps. Actual speeds may vary depending on location, distance from the tower, local conditions, concurrent users, hardware and software configuration, and the download/upload destination. In non-5G coverage areas, devices will automatically switch to 4G or 3G.

Digicel Fiji’s 5G network, built with Nokia equipment, is designed to meet stringent cybersecurity standards for the protection of customer data.

As Digicel Fiji rolls out 5G, it is also maximising efficiency with its existing 4G network, reusing it either to deploy coverage in new locations or to add capacity within existing coverage areas to improve service quality.

5G smartphones are now available at Digicel Fiji stores.
