Compliance with the Scrap Metal Trade Act must be balanced - Kamikamica

The significance of compliance with the Scrap Metal Trade Act must be balanced and by adhering to the provisions within this legislative framework, we actively contribute to the containment of unexpected and long-term impacts on our environment.

This was highlighted by the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade Manoa Kamikamica while speaking on the current initiatives being undertaken by Dayal’s Steels Pte Ltd of removing scrap metal on land.

Kamikamica says this is a commendable effort which ties well with the Government's effort in ensuring a sustainable community for us all today and in the great days ahead of our Nation.

He says the initiatives that have been undertaken by Dayal’s Steel Pte Ltd encompass a wide range of end-of-life vehicles, such as cars, trucks, and heavy machinery, as well as various plants and equipment.

He adds, central to their discussion is the regulatory framework that governs these initiatives, namely the Scrap Metal Trade Act which serves as a leading source of protection for our environment and habitats, as it aims to responsibly manage and recycle old and end-of-life metals found in our surroundings.

Kamikamica says the act is a pivotal avenue for taking proactive measures to recycle these metals and reduce their presence in our surroundings.

The Minister says it is worth noting that companies with a wealth of experience handling scrap metals are duly licensed by the Ministry and this strategic step ensures we do not have these metals lingering in our immediate vicinity. Kamikamica says moreover, within this Ministry, the Department of National Trade Measurement and Standards plays a crucial role in the collection and facilitation of the recycling process.

The Minister commended Dayal’s Steel Pte Ltd for their commitment to removing scrap metal from our land and securing a more environmentally sustainable Fiji for all.

He also acknowledged the team at the Ministry of Trade, Co-operatives, SMEs, and Communications for playing a vital role in ensuring successful outcomes in this domain.
