People found begging in public places in Lautoka are now being issued official warning notices as the Lautoka City Council, Fiji Police Force and the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection begin a joint operation to address the issue.
The joint initiative aims to ensure public spaces remain safe, accessible and welcoming for everyone while also providing appropriate support and assistance to people engaged in begging.
The notices advise that persistent begging and obstructing pedestrian access are offences under the relevant laws and may result in enforcement action if the behaviour continues.
However, the Lautoka City Council says the initiative is not focused solely on enforcement.
It says people in need are being referred to the Ministry of Women, Children and Social Protection, where they can access welfare and social support services aimed at addressing the underlying causes of their circumstances.
The Council adds that it will continue working closely with its partner agencies to promote a safer, cleaner and more compassionate city for residents and visitors.
