All nightclubs in Fiji should close at 11pm to allow parents to spend more time with their families, according to Methodist Church President Reverend Dr Semisi Turagavou, who is also calling for a National Day of Prayer for people of all faiths.
Reverend Dr Turagavou raised these issues during consultations on the Constitution Amendment Bill, saying there needs to be greater control over nightclub operating hours and more emphasis on family responsibilities.
He says nightclubs have previously remained open until 1am, raising concerns about parents going out at night and leaving their children at home until the following morning.
Turagavou says this is an issue the country needs to seriously consider, as both mothers and fathers should return home earlier and spend time with their families.
He is proposing that all nightclubs close at 11pm to allow parents to return home earlier and fulfil their responsibilities towards their children and families.
The Methodist Church President also believes Fiji should have a National Day of Prayer, when people of different faiths can pray for the country.
He says the proposal does not mean everyone must gather under one roof, as people can pray from their homes or wherever they are.
Turagavou says Christians, Muslims, Hindus and members of other religious groups should all be encouraged to take part in praying for the nation.
He believes that when people pray collectively, God will hear their prayers.
His proposals focus on the importance of faith, family responsibilities and encouraging parents to spend more time with their children.
