The Fiji Trades Union Congress has today confirmed that it formed the People’s Democratic Party and will continue to appear in the party’s public forums going into the general elections next year.
Fijivillage has noticed FTUC executives, mainly General Secretary Felix Anthony, speaking at most of the People’s Democratic Party public meetings.
Anthony has not been answering our calls.
His secretary keeps saying that he does not carry a mobile phone and several messages have been left for him however he has not responded.
We spoke to FTUC President Daniel Urai about the matter.
Fijivillage also questioned Urai whether the FTUC executives are using the People’s Democratic Party’s platform to push their own agenda.
We also asked him on the issues raised by the government that it does not want some unionists to push their own political agenda through a political party.
Urai said a political forum is the best place to raise their issues and they will continue to do this although trade unionists are not allowed to be officials of a party.
When questioned on whether the FTUC is also backing the PDP through the provision of facilities and other matters, Urai said FTUC’s affiliates agreed to the formation of the party and will provide support.
However, he claimed the party is paying for this.
Party spokesperson Nirmal Singh who had earlier said that the party has no connections with Daniel Urai or Felix Anthony, will comment later.
