The United Nation High Commissioner for Human Rights is now working closely with the security forces in the country to ban torture and ill-treatment of detainees.
Regional representative Matilda Bogner said that Fiji has a strong legal framework that bans torture and ill treatment as required by international law.
Bogner said they have worked with the Fiji Police Force and the Prison Authority in training their people to understand it is not their duty to take the law in their own hands and give out punishment.
She added that Fiji like any other countries in the world will have to work together with their security forces to see that they will not tortured those who are arrested or detained.
