Red and speed light cameras are being trialed on Suva roads to test their suitability for traffic enforcement.

Land Transport Authority general manager operations Josefa Vosanibola said the LTA now has in its possession three types of cameras.

He said one is the speed camera alone which can either be portable, mounted on a vehicle or on the roadside on tripod or stationary ones which will be on boxes on the highways or at busy centers.

There will be red light cameras installed near the traffic lights to book people who jump the red lights and there is a combination one to book you both for the red and the speed.

Vosanibola added these will be installed at key junctions at FIT and from FIT to Makoi and slowly we will work with the councils to work on their traffic lights within their towns or cities.

Police are assisting the LTA to identify black spots where the cameras would be set up.

The LTA is looking at installing 12 of these cameras on Fiji roads and slowly increase the number to 30 within three years.

The cameras are being facilitated through a partnership with Telecom Fiji that is liaising with a South African company from where the cameras are purchased.

LTA expects to start booking traffic offenders using the red, and speed light cameras by the end of January 2011 to coincide with the implementation of supporting legal clauses of the LTA Act which is under review.
