Bangladesh squatter residents receive leases

After a lapse of eight years, people living in Bangladesh squatter settlement in Nakasi, will truly have a merry Christmas and new year after they received their leases and the completion of upgrading developments by the Local Government Ministry this morning.

Local Government Minister Colonel Samuela Saumatua said the development will see 57 fully serviced lots with on site sewerage, water, electricity, telephone, sealed roads and fire hydrants which has been handed over to the Nausori town council for maintenance purposes.

Colonel Saumatua said the completion has also provided the tenants a window of opportunity for security of tenure and improved the resident’s well being.

He added that it has also facilitated in the breaking of the vicious cycle of poverty which has enabled the residents to become part of the empowered and inclusive Fijian community.

Meanwhile, resident and one of the recipients, Ropate Quminakelo said this is the best Christmas gift ever for his community.
