Ravinesh Chand has gone from the cane farming community of Sarava in Ba to scooping the prestigious Vice Chancellor’s All Rounder Prize at the University of the South Pacific Medal ceremony last night.
For the 23 year old who used to walk along dirt roads to attend Sarava Sanatan Dharam Primary School and later Ba Sanatan College he dedicates his win to his parents.
Chand said he honored his parents last request as he got a Multi-Ethnic scholarship to attend USP.
Today Chand who works as a Mathematics teacher at International School Suva also helps pay for the school fees of his younger siblings.
Chand took the Gold Medals for the most outstanding graduate with a major in Education and the Vice Chancellors award which is for the best combined academic performance and all round service to the community.
For both his prizes Chand received $3,500 from the sponsors of the two Categories.
Meanwhile a total of 28 Gold Medalists received Medals & Prizes at the 2014 ceremony last night.
King Tupou VI of Tonga was the chief guest last night and will also be the chief guest at the graduation ceremony tomorrow where a total of 1,300 students are expected to graduate.
