The handing over of six sewing machines to a women’s group on Bau Island in Tailevu by the Minister for Women, Social Welfare and Poverty Alleviation Dr Jiko Luveni will boost their income projects.
Media Liaison Officer Anshoo Chandra said the minister will also discuss projects from which women on the island can attain financial independence.
Chandra said a talanoa session will enable villagers to highlight problems they may be facing on the island and identify ways the ministry can step in to assist them.
She said Dr Luveni’s visit is also aligned with government’s vision to reach out to people in rural and remote areas because these were the very people who suffered from poverty and need the direction to take their families out of poverty.
The visit, which transpired out of a handicraft bazaar organized by women, is poised to be a fun-filled occasion.
From December 8 to 11, the minister will be touring the Lomaiviti Group to pursue plans for socio-economic development and empowerment of women as outlined in the Women’s Plan of Action 2010 to 2019.
