Media told to work on its trust to get free space

The Media Industry Development Authority, which has been set up under the Media Decree, said the media has to work on its trust in order to win the free space it is asking for.

The authority said in its meetings, one of the major concerns expressed by the media services is to have the necessary free space to perform its responsibilities.

It said trust is won gradually through one’s performance.

The authority said for example, as the Media Decree is in force, media outlets should not ignore the provisions in it, such as the rule of byline - that news stories over 50 words must include authorship.

The new body also said that media services have to redefine priorities in the context of their developmental role and find alternatives to conventional goals and practices.

The authority chaired by Professor Subramani said this developmental role includes, that the media be part of nation-making, to work for progress towards a truly pluralistic and modern Fiji, and take on the added responsibility of protecting the human and natural environment.
