The Acting Chief Executive of the Fiji Sugar Corporation has recommended that the Rarawai Sugar Mill in Ba be closed down as part of the major reforms needed to ensure that the sugar industry remains viable.
Speaking to Fijivillage this afternoon John Prasad confirmed that his recommendation to shut down the Rawarai mill has been presented to the Prime Minister and Minister for Sugar Commodore Voreqe Bainimarama as it is not part of the recommendations in the Delloit report.
According to Prasad it is just not viable to continue operating the Rarawai mill.
And only weeks after taking up office, Prasad has also taken immediate steps to cut back on costs.
He said tax dollars will no longer be used to pay for allowances for the staff of the FSC such as water and electricity bills.
Prasad said major decisions on the future of the FSC is expected in the weeks and months ahead.
