The Fiji Media Watch, a non-government organization, has been holding workshops on the impacts of mass media on the people of Fiji over the past six months and continues to make generalized statements.
One such workshop is underway in Suva where community leaders have been invited to enhance their knowledge on the negative impacts of mass media, however, there is no expert presentations from any stakeholder from the media industry in Fiji or abroad.
There is also no substantiated and credible information or data available, based on any study carried out in Fiji on what impacts Mass Media is actually having on the people.
We spoke to Fiji Media Watch Education Coordinator Lusiana Senibulu on the information and advise being given to the participants and where they have gathered such information on the impacts of the media on the people of Fiji.
Senibulu made general comments that certain media programs are increasing incidents of incest and rape in our society and that children are failing classes due to its impacts.
We asked her where she got such information from and whether they are basing such claims on credible information or findings before the information is passed on to the participants.
Senibulu was reluctant to answer but claimed that such information is from information gathered through past workshops.
Senibulu also said that they are basing their claims on a report compiled by students of Veiuto Primary school.
However, the report itself has not been published at this stage.
