Vanuatu United FC got off to a winning start to their Challengers Group campaign in Round 6 of the OFC Pro League with a 3-1 victory over PNG Hekari FC at Eden Park.
Knowing a win was important after Solomon Kings FC defeated Tahiti United 2–1 earlier in the day, Vanuatu United started strongly and created several early chances.
They took the lead just before the half-hour mark through Raymond Diho.
PNG Hekari responded eight minutes later through captain Ati Kepo to level the score at 1-all before half-time.
The second half started slowly, but Vanuatu United regained control as the match opened up.
The breakthrough came with 15 minutes remaining when Alex Saniel scored a goal to restore Vanuatu United’s lead before adding another goal in the 87th minute to seal the win.
The victory gives Vanuatu United an important three points ahead of a crucial match against Solomon Kings FC on Sunday at 1pm at GO Media Stadium, while Tahiti United will look to bounce back against PNG Hekari FC at 5pm.
Meanwhile, in the Leaders Group, Extra Bula FC will face Auckland FC at 2.30pm tomorrow, while South Melbourne FC will take on South Island United at 6.30pm. Both matches will be played at Eden Park.
The winner of the Challengers Group will take on the fourth-placed team in the Leaders Group to qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held on 20th May at Go Media Stadium, while the final will be played on 24th May at Eden Park.
The OFC Pro League will also determine who represents Oceania at the annual FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the quadrennial FIFA Club World Cup.
