Vanuatu United FC have moved closer to a place in the OFC Pro League semi-finals after defeating Solomon Kings FC 3-2 in a thrilling Challengers Group clash at Go Media Stadium in Auckland.

The win puts Vanuatu United on six points from two matches and in a strong position to top the group, with a draw against Tahiti United in their final pool match enough to secure a semi-final play-off spot.

Otto Ingham gave Vanuatu United a 1-nil lead in the first half before Solomon Kings equalised through Sota Higashide’s penalty after the break.

Alex Saniel restored Vanuatu United’s lead before an own goal by Javin Wae made it 3-1. Wae later scored for Solomon Kings, but Vanuatu United held on for a crucial victory.

Meanwhile, Tahiti United will meet PNG Hekari FC at 5pm.

Vanuatu will next face Tahiti United at 7pm on Wednesday, while Solomon Kings FC take on PNG Hekari FC at 3pm, with both matches to be played at Go Media Stadium.

The winner of the Challengers Group will take on the fourth-placed team in the Leaders Group to qualify for the semi-finals, which will be held on 20th May at Go Media Stadium, while the final will be played on 24th May at Eden Park.

The OFC Pro League will also determine who represents Oceania at the annual FIFA Intercontinental Cup and the quadrennial FIFA Club World Cup.
