Eligible TSLS-sponsored students will no longer have to pay bank account opening and maintenance fees under a strengthened partnership between the Tertiary Scholarships and Loans Service and HFC Bank.

The two institutions formalised the partnership through the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding, reaffirming a longstanding relationship built on trust, reliability and a shared commitment to supporting Fiji's tertiary students.

Under the new MoU, eligible TSLS-sponsored students will benefit from zero account-opening and maintenance fees, no account penalties during their sponsorship and fast-tracked account opening once their scholarship is confirmed.

All account openings will remain subject to standard identification and verification requirements.

The strengthened arrangements are designed to ease the financial and administrative burdens often associated with opening and maintaining bank accounts, ensuring more of the students' scholarship allowances remain available for essential educational and living expenses.

TSLS Chief Executive Officer Dr Apisalome Movono says the partnership is another important milestone in TSLS's continuing efforts to place students at the centre of its services.

Dr Movono says the partnership reflects TSLS's broader commitment to addressing the practical challenges faced by students, particularly those from rural, maritime and financially disadvantaged backgrounds.

He says for many students leaving their villages and communities for tertiary education, opening a bank account can be one of the first administrative and financial challenges they encounter.

Dr Movono says TSLS wants to remove these unnecessary barriers so that students who have successfully secured a scholarship can access their financial support promptly without having to navigate complicated processes or incur avoidable banking charges.

He says the removal of monthly account administration fees may appear to be a small change, but for students and families managing limited financial resources, every dollar matters.

Dr Movono also acknowledged HFC Bank's commitment as a local financial institution investing in the future of Fiji's young people.

HFC Bank Chief Executive Officer Rakesh Ram says the MoU takes a longstanding institutional relationship directly to students.

Ram says HFC Bank has been proud to stand alongside TSLS since its establishment in 2014.

He says removing fees and simplifying account opening are practical steps that help students start their tertiary journey on the right footing, with more of their allowance going where it is meant to go.

Ram says HFC Bank looks forward to working with TSLS on financial literacy so that students are well prepared as they move from study into employment.

Beyond the immediate banking benefits, the MoU establishes a platform for closer collaboration on financial literacy, responsible money management and improved financial inclusion among tertiary students.

The strengthened information-sharing and administrative arrangements, subject to applicable privacy, banking confidentiality and regulatory requirements, are also expected to support more efficient scholarship administration and financial service delivery.

The partnership builds on a relationship dating back to the establishment of TSLS in 2014, during which HFC Bank has supported the management of TSLS accounts and contributed to the efficient administration of student scholarship funds.

Both institutions say they look forward to working closely to implement the arrangements and ensure eligible scholarship recipients can benefit from the enhanced banking services.
