Three traders in the Central and Western Divisions have been found breaching the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission Act 2010, while three outlets in the Western Division were found violating food safety regulations during Diwali inspections.
The Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission says it has intensified inspections across the country during the Diwali festive period.
FCCC says its officers have carried out 184 inspections and surveillance activities, along with 26 joint inspections with health inspectors nationwide.
The Commission says three traders were found breaching regulations relating to the sale of goods without FCCC price authorisation, the sale of price-controlled goods at approved maximum prices and the proper display of prices.
FCCC says three outlets in the Western Division were also found breaching food safety regulations during joint inspections with health inspectors.
The Commission says discoloured meat products and expired food items were condemned during the inspections.
FCCC says its officers are checking whether businesses are clearly displaying prices, charging customers the correct amounts and providing receipts.
Officers are also inspecting food products to ensure they are safe for consumption and have clearly marked expiry dates.
Meanwhile, FCCC is urging shoppers to exercise caution when purchasing items advertised as Diwali specials.
The Commission is reminding consumers to check expiry dates, ensure prices at the checkout match those displayed on shelves and check their receipts before leaving supermarkets.
FCCC says these precautions are important to protect consumers from overcharging and ensure families purchase safe food during the festive season.
