A year after concerns were raised about alleged waste discharge into the Nasivi River in Tavua, the Water Authority of Fiji says the issue has been rectified following work with the Tavua Town Council.

The authority says investigations found that an improper septic system was causing seepage into the river, and the problem was fixed earlier this month to stop the seepage.

However, we have sent further questions to WAF, to confirm whether the discharge was from Tavua Hospital.

The issue was first raised during the Fijian Media Association’s ‘Meet the Public and the Press’ session at the Golden Event Centre in Tavua in October last year.

Two Tavua residents, including Chair of the Land-Owning Unit for Tavua, Tevita Ralulu, alleged that Tavua Hospital was discharging waste into the Nasivi River.

When questioned by fijivillage News at the time about whether an assessment had begun, the late Permanent Secretary for Health Jemesa Tudravu said his team had not received anything on the matter at the time.

Water Authority of Fiji Chief Executive Officer Seru Soderberg also addressed the issue during the session, stressing that such discharges were illegal under environmental laws.

Soderberg later confirmed to fijivillage News that a team had visited the site on Friday, October 17th, 2025, to conduct tests.

The Water Authority of Fiji says the issue has now been resolved following its work with the Tavua Town Council.
