Substitute Oh Hyeon-Gyu emerged as South Korea's hero, scoring a late winner as they came from behind to beat the Czech Republic 2-1 in a thrilling FIFA World Cup Group A clash at Estadio Akron in Mexico.

South Korea were the better side for much of the contest and created the majority of the scoring opportunities, with captain Son Heung-min registering five shots in the first half.

Despite South Korea's dominance in possession, it was Czechia who broke the deadlock in the 59th minute through captain Ladislav Krejčí.

South Korea responded eight minutes later with a well deserved equaliser from Hwang In-Beom in the 67th minute.

South Korea completed the comeback in the 80th minute when substitute Oh Hyeon-Gyu found the back of the net to spark celebrations among the South Korean supporters.

Czechia fought hard to find a late equaliser, but South Korea's defence held on to seal a dramatic comeback victory.

The result sees South Korea join co-hosts Mexico on three points in Group A after Mexico defeated South Africa 2-0 in the opening match.

South Korea will now turn their attention to their next group match against Mexico next Friday at 1pm, after which they will face South Africa on the 25th at 1pm.

The Czech Republic will take on South Africa next Friday at 4am before facing Mexico on the 25th at 1pm as they look to keep their hopes of reaching the knockout stages alive.

In tomorrow's matches, co-host Canada takes on Bosnia and Herzegovina at 7am while USA takes on Paraguay at 1pm.
