Hurricanes midfielder, Riley Higgins rejected a new two-year contract with the team to sign with Edinburgh, a move that could see the promising player switch allegiance to Scotland.
This has been confirmed by Hurricanes coach, Clark Laidlaw.
After struggling for game time with the Hurricanes, the 23-year-old announced that he would be leaving New Zealand at the end of 2026 to join United Rugby Championship side Edinburgh on a three-year deal.
Higgins debuted for the Hurricanes at 19 and toured with the All Blacks XV team in 2024 but has barely featured this season.
Laidlaw says selection depth made retention difficult in some positions.
He says it is a juggling act when you’ve got more than one good player in each position.
Coach says how do you keep everybody happy?
The short answer is you can’t, but Riley made his decision a while ago.
