No Fijian nationals have been reported adversely affected by the ongoing protests in France, as the law and order situation continues to deteriorate.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and External Trade says they are closely monitoring the ongoing protests in France.

The protests began in September, with student demonstrations over France’s education system growing into nationwide rallies, as hundreds of thousands of people took to the streets and trade unions joined the movement.

Initially led by high school students, the protests have spread to parents, university students and trade unions, with demonstrations reported in several cities across France.

Students are calling for more resources for schools and better learning conditions, while also raising concerns over what they describe as excessive police action.

In a statement, the Ministry says Fiji’s Permanent Mission in Geneva is maintaining close contact with the Fijian community in France and providing advice and consular assistance where needed.

The Ministry is urging all Fijians in France to remain vigilant, avoid protest sites and large gatherings, and follow safety advisories issued by local authorities.

It says further updates will be provided as the situation develops.

Fijian nationals requiring advice or assistance are encouraged to contact First Secretary Wilisoni Jiuta at the Permanent Mission in Geneva on +41 22 733 0789 or email mission@fijiprunog.ch
