Mexico has advanced to the last 16 of the FIFA World Cup after beating Ecuador 2-0.

The match was delayed by an hour due to a thunderstorm in Mexico City before the co-hosts produced a dominant first-half display.

The Mexicans made a fast start, with Julian Quinones scoring the opening goal before setting up Raul Jimenez to make it 2-0 before half-time.

Ecuador played better in the second half but could not score, with Gonzalo Plata coming closest to finding the back of the net.

With the win, Mexico will play either England or DR Congo in the Round of 16.

The match ended on a sour note for Ecuador after defender Piero Hincapie was sent off in stoppage time for covering his mouth while speaking to an opponent, becoming the second player at the tournament to be sent off for the offence after Paraguay's Miguel Almiron.

In other results, France beat Sweden 3-0 to set up a Round of 16 clash with Paraguay, while Norway advanced after edging Ivory Coast 2-1.

Meanwhile, in tomorrow’s Round of 32 matches, England will face DR Congo at 4am, Belgium will face Senegal at 8am, while the USA will take on Bosnia and Herzegovina at 12pm.
