Lionel Messi scored a brace as defending champions Argentina defeated Austria 2-0 in their FIFA World Cup 2026 Group J clash.

Messi opened the scoring in the 38th minute before sealing the victory with his second goal deep into stoppage time in the 95th minute.

The Argentina captain also extended his record as the World Cup's all-time leading scorer with the two-goal performance.

Austria fought hard throughout the match but were unable to find a way past the Argentine defence as the South Americans secured their second straight win of the tournament.

Argentina had opened their World Cup campaign with a 3-0 win over Algeria, while Austria had defeated Jordan 3-1 in their first match.

With this win, Argentina have booked their place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 Round of 32.

Argentina will conclude their Group J campaign against Jordan on Sunday at 2pm, while Austria will face Algeria at the same time.

Meanwhile, in other matches, France face Iraq at 9am, Norway meet Senegal at midday, while Jordan take on Algeria at 3pm.
