Let the people decide if Fiji is ready for a non-iTaukei Prime Minister “ Chaudhry
Let the people decide.

That is the message from the Leader of the Fiji Labour Party, Mahendra Chaudhry, when asked by proposed SODELPA candidate Varinava Tiko whether Fiji is ready for a non-iTaukei Prime Minister.

While raising the question during the Fiji Media Association Town Hall Forum at the FNU Campus in Nasinu, Tiko said he believes everyone is fed up with hearing the word coup, as it opens up old wounds for some people.

He says he is asking this question because the same thing happened when the 1997 Constitution was rushed.

He adds that people were complaining.

Tiko says people were not happy with what Sitiveni Rabuka was doing, and he describes it as a tactic.

He also questioned the panellists about what would happen if people rose up and had Cabinet members arrested, given the clauses in the Bill relating to the military and Cabinet.

He further asks who the military would listen to in such a situation.

Tiko claims the government is going around the country deceiving the iTaukei people.

He also asked government representatives what would happen if landowners found out that resources were not being given to them, and what would happen if they discovered the truth after the Bill was translated for them.

He says everyone is calling for the removal of immunity, and people are fed up with hearing about coups.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica has assured members of the public that the government is listening to their views.
