Holy Cross captain ready to face former school in Deans elimination

Holy Cross captain ready to face former school in Deans elimination
The Vodafone Deans Trophy Under-18 elimination will be an emotional occasion for Holy Cross College captain Akuila Vodotagitagi as he prepares to face the school he represented just a year ago.

The 17-year-old from Lavena, Taveuni will lead Holy Cross against Nasinu Secondary School, where he played in the Under-17 competition last season.

Vodotagitagi says taking on his former teammates will be one of the toughest moments of his rugby journey because of the close friendships they built during their time together.

While he expects the occasion to be emotional, he says his focus is leading Holy Cross and helping the team secure a place in the semi-finals.

The Holy Cross captain says the team's journey to the eliminations has not been easy.

He says they have trained with limited equipment, while some players have had to overcome challenges at home. He also says five players missed last week's match in Labasa after being suspended from school.

Despite those setbacks, Vodotagitagi says the team continued to encourage one another and remained determined to keep winning.

He says many of the players are from the Northern Division and tomorrow's match will be their first opportunity to play on the big stage in Suva.

Vodotagitagi says while some of the boys are nervous, most are excited and ready for the challenge.

He says facing familiar faces will make tomorrow's match special, but once the whistle blows, his full attention will be on leading Holy Cross in their bid for a place in the Vodafone Deans Trophy Under-18 semi-finals.

Holy Cross College will take on Nasinu Secondary School at 12.20pm while Suva Grammar will face Ratu Luke Secondary School at 1.50pm.

Both games will be held at the Grammar Ground.

At St Vincent Ground, Lelean Memorial School will face Marist Brothers High School at 12.20pm, while Ratu Kadavulevu School will take on Ratu Sukuna Memorial School at 1.50pm.

Meanwhile, Queen Victoria School will travel to Lawaqa Park to face Ba Provincial Free Bird Institute at 10am, while Cuvu College will take on St John's College at 1pm.

At Ratu Ganilau Park, Ratu Navula College will face Shiri Guru Nanak Khalsa College at 2pm, before Ra High School meets Navatu Secondary School at 3.25pm.
