Fiji Rugby Union and the Rugby vuvale have honoured the Girmitiyas — indentured labourers who arrived in Fiji from India between 1879 and 1916.
The Fiji Rugby Union says their journey was marked by sacrifice, resilience, and courage, and their enduring spirit helped shape the cultural and economic foundations of our nation.
They say as people observe Girmit Day, now a public holiday, people also recognise the lasting legacy of the Indian diaspora in Fiji and their meaningful contributions to the rugby vuvale.
FRU says from passionate supporters in the stands, to business owners and sponsors who have helped the players grow, to those who have contributed their skills both on and off the field, their impact on rugby and on Fiji is deeply valued and long remembered.
They say in recognition of this shared history and strong connection, FRU CEO Koli Sewabu was recently invited to a special celebration in the United Kingdom, honouring the historical and cultural ties between Fiji, India, and the wider diaspora community.
The Union says today, they honour the past, celebrate the present, and move forward united for the future.
