Failure of Constitution Bill could lead to dismantling of the Coalition Government - Rabuka
Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says the failure of the Constitution Amendment Bill 2026 could lead to the dismantling of the Coalition Government, with political parties contesting the next general election independently.

Rabuka highlighted this after the  consultations on the Constitution Amendment Bill in Savusavu when questioned by the media on what could it mean to the government following SODELPA's decision to not support the third reading of the Constitution Amendment Bill.

Rabuka says this could result in the failure of the Bill, bringing the constitutional amendment process to a halt.

Rabuka says if the required majority is not secured, there will be no referendum, but the general elections will still go ahead.

He also indicated that this could lead to the dismantling of the Coalition Government.

When asked whether this would mean his People's Alliance Party would contest the next general elections on its own, Rabuka said each political party would have to contest independently.

He says there will be no pre-election coalition.

Meanwhile, SODELPA have made their stand that they will not support the third reading of the Constitution Amendment Bill in its current form.

The decision follows discussions held during the Party's Special Annual General Meeting at Gospel Primary School Hall today.

Party General Secretary Levi Vere says the Board has recommended that the Party not support the Bill's third reading, and the decision will be relayed to its three members of Parliament.

Vere adds that if any of the Party's Members of Parliament go against the Management Boards directive, the Partys disciplinary provisions will be invoked.
