16-year-old Fiji high jumper, Shawntell Lockington will be participating in the Women’s High Jump in the Commonwealth Games at 4pm this afternoon.

Lockington currently holds the national record with a jump of 1.71 meters.

She won the gold medal with that record jump in the Mini Pacific Games in Vanuatu last year.

Lockington’s mother, Elenoa Lockington says Shawntell has been preparing well and she has what it takes to compete amongst the best.

With Coca-Cola Games coming up next week, 2018 Ba Zone champions Xavier College will be banking on their star high jumper to win gold in the Intermediate Girls High Jump.

The Year 12 student from Nasalia village in Kadavu also broke a 32 year old record in the junior girls high jump in last year’s Coca-Cola Games.

Lockington jumped 1.66 metres while the old record was 1.62 metres set way back in 1985.

Meanwhile, Xavier College Head of Department, PEMAC Aseri Tokaseu says their preparations this year have not being consistent like the previous years due to the flooding.

Tokaseu adds they are hoping for the best as they prepare to field more than 55 athletes to the Coca-Cola Games which will be held next week Thursday to Saturday at the ANZ Stadium.
