The Australian swimming team have put out a challenge to other nations, especially, the USA, competing in the upcoming Paris Olympics, that they are coming for the crown.

Australia were only two titles short of the US at Tokyo three years ago when they grabbed a national record of nine gold medals.

The Australians have landed in France with great expectations after winning 13 titles at the World Championships in Fukuoka last year, six more than the US team.

Australia's Head Swimming coach Rohan Taylor says they have earned the expectations and believes they thrive on them.

Australia has topped the swimming medal table only once in Olympic history, in their home pool at the 1956 Melbourne Games.

The last time the US finished off the top was at the 1988 Seoul Games where they finished second behind an East German team whose swimmers were later implicated in doping.

Australia has scooped more than 40 percent of its total Olympic medals from the pool.

The swimming competition starts this Sunday.

Meanwhile, the Olympic Games kick off this Thursday with the men’s football and men’s rugby 7s competition.
