The Canberra Vikings has topped the National Rugby Championship points table after their huge 66-5 win over the Fiji Airways Drua last night.
In their best performance of the season by some margin, the Vikings picked up a valuable bonus point in the 10 tries to one win at Viking Park.
Vikings captain Tom Cusack says this is what they have been building for, over the first four weeks of the competition.
The Drua’s attacking intent was clear from the outset, though their handling was often letting them down, Eroni Vasiteri looked certain to score, only to lose the ball in contact several times.
Drua’s halfback Frank Lomani was their lone try scorer in the 18th minute, but it was all Vikings from there on.
Drua captain John Stewart says it was a disappointing result.
Meanwhile an angry Canberra Vikings player has accused a Fijian Drua opponent of eye gouging with Australia’s leading referee labelling the incident “very, very serious.”
Vikings hooker Folau Fainga’a reeled away from a breakdown in pain after winning a penalty in the 21st minute and received medical attention to an eye.
The match officials did not issue any on field punishment for the incident, or identify a player while television replays were inconclusive.
After round one, Drua hooker Samu Suguturaga was slapped with a massive 20 week ban after being found guilty of biting Brisbane City captain Andrew Ready earlier this month.
This was the equal largest margin of victory by any NRC team.
The Vikings (15 points) now lead the competition, ahead of the second placed Drua on points differential.
The Drua will travel to Sydney to face the Sydney Rams at 4pm next Saturday.
