South Africa's chances of qualifying for the Cricket World Cup semi‑finals were dented when their game against West Indies was called off due to persistent rain.

South Africa who lost their first three games, reached 29‑2 in the 7.3 overs possible in Southampton.

Both teams were awarded one point each.

Although South Africa collected their first World Cup point, they face a struggle to finish in the top four of the group.

This was the second match of the World Cup to be abandoned because of rain following the wash‑out between Pakistan and Sri Lanka.

South Africa will now face Afghanistan this Sunday at 12.30am while West Indies will take on England 9.30pm this Friday.

Meanwhile, tonight at 9.30 Bangladesh play Sri Lanka.

The group stage format is a round robin, where all ten teams play each other once, in a single group.

This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches.

The top four teams from the group will progress to the knockout stage.

New Zealand currently lead the points table, England are second, India are in third place while Australia come in fourth.

The final will be played on the 14th of July.
