South African rugby is in a "low, depressing, terrible place".

That's the view of former Springboks coach Nick Mallet after Italy beat the Boks 20‑18 yesterday.

Mallett is well‑qualified to judge this result as he remains one of the Boks' most successful coaches of the professional era and he also coached Italy from 2007‑11.

He was stunned by the latest effort that saw the Springboks lose their seventh test from 11 this year.

Mallett says he never expected to see Italy beat the Springboks.

He says Rugby has evolved, but the Springboks have not and there is a need for a massive mindset change.

Meanwhile, the Springboks face Wales this weekend.
