NZ Silver Ferns captain Katrina Grant teared up in a post‑match television interview today as her sides' concerning recent results continued at the Commonwealth Games.
New Zealand lost their final pool match against England on the Gold Coast 54‑45, their largest losing margin in history against the Roses. They will need to rely on goal percentage to sneak through to the medal stage of the competition.
Stuff.co reports that England savoured the morale‑boosting victory, with the roar of: "We've never beaten New Zealand in a major tournament. If we can do that we can do anything" belting out from their team huddle at fulltime.
The under‑siege Silver Ferns face an anxious wait to see whether they're in the semifinals at the Commonwealth Games.
Uganda could potentially overtake the Ferns into second place in the group if they can rack up the goals against Scotland tonight in their last group game.
New Zealand will be favoured to advance, but losses in pool play to Malawi and England mean they are almost certain to face red‑hot gold medal favourite Australia in Saturday's semifinal.
The loss against England continued New Zealand's dire recent results, dropping 10 of their past 16 games, including Sunday's embarrassing 57‑53 loss to Malawi.
