A record third match of the Cricket World Cup was abandoned because of rain as Bangladesh's game against Sri Lanka was called off without a ball being bowled.

With persistent rain falling in Bristol, the match was called off shortly before 1 o’clock this morning.

Sri Lanka's game against Pakistan at Bristol was also called off due to rain.

With both sides taking a point from this morning's wash‑out, Sri Lanka move up to fifth in the table and Bangladesh climb to seventh.

Sri Lanka will now face Australia this Saturday at 9.30pm while Bangladesh will take on West Indies 9.30pm next Monday.

Meanwhile, Australia will play Pakistan at 9.30 tonight.

The group stage format is a round robin, where all ten teams play each other once, in a single group.

This means a total of 45 matches will be played, with each team playing a total of nine matches.

The top four teams from the group will progress to the knockout stage.

New Zealand currently lead the points table, England are second, India are in third place while Australia come in fourth.

The final will be played on the 14th of July.
