Pope’s century keeps England in the fight after India’s dominant start

England vice-captain Ollie Pope scored a brilliant unbeaten century to give his side hope after India made a strong start in the third Test at Headingley.

India had taken control on Day 1 with a massive total of 471 runs. Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 101, Shubman Gill made 147, and Rishabh Pant added 134 in a dominant batting display.

England looked shaky early on Day 2, losing Ben Duckett (62), Zak Crawley and Joe Root, all taken by India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. But Pope steadied the innings and punished India for some missed catching chances, reaching his century by the end of the day.

England finished at 209 for 3, still trailing by 262 runs. While India remain in a strong position, Pope’s knock has kept England in the contest on a pitch still good for batting.

The match is finely poised heading into Day 3, with both teams looking to take control.
