Philippines boxing great Manny Pacquiao says "he's not afraid to die" while trying to help poor people in the country during the coronavirus pandemic.

The Filipino icon is a senator in his home country, where he famously grew up on the streets before pursuing a career in the boxing arena.

Speaking to the Manila Bulletin newspaper, Pacquiao said he feels he should be a visible presence during the Covid-19 crisis which is gripping the nation, particularly the poor.

He says if you are a leader, you have to be a front-liner and he is not afraid to die in the cause of helping his people.

He adds that you have to lead and let people see you that you are with them in this time of need.

Pacquiao has also used his fortune to help medical personnel test and treat Filipinos struck by the virus, donating five buses to transport healthcare workers around the capital Manila.

He is also waiting for shipments of 50,000 coronavirus test kits and medical masks from China to help combat the pandemic.
