The Fiji Sports Council is working with the business community to develop a new stadium near Denarau Island in Nadi.
With Fiji’s bid to host an international sevens tournament in 2020, Fiji National Sports Commission Chairman Peter Mazey says that one of the reasons to build a new stadium in Nadi is because of the convenience of accommodation and the airport is closer.
Mazey adds that many fans from New Zealand had to settle for accommodation in the west during the Chiefs and Crusaders Super Rugby match in May this year and they had to travel all the way to Suva to watch the game.
Mazey says that for big international tournaments, we need at least about 4,000 beds and Suva does not have enough accommodation to cater for an international event which should also accommodate the fans from overseas and their teams.
