Fiji could be left out of the proposed World Rugby Nations Championship until 2026 if the proposed competition manages to get across the line sooner.

The Sydney Morning Herald reported that a new proposal is being considered which could see Fiji left out of the Championships until 2026 as the governing body “fights for a compromise to get the controversial global competition over the line.

World Rugby is considering starting the tournament in 2022 with just 10 and not the originally hoped for 12 nations.

This meant that it will only see the current Six Nations and Rugby Championship unions involved in the tournament, meaning the likes of top‑10 nation including Fiji, World Cup host nation Japan, USA and Georgia locked out for at least four years.

World Rugby will have a meeting next week on the new proposal.

Meanwhile, Fiji is pooled with Wales, Australia, Georgia and Uruguay at the Rugby World Cup which will kick off on September 21st in Japan.
