Discipline is the main area New Zealand Sevens coach Scott Waldrom is looking at to improve his side's fourth‑placed showing at the Las Vegas Sevens.
New Zealand made it to the semifinals for the third time in five World Rugby Sevens Series events, but again failed to make the final.
This time it was due to coughing up 19 unanswered points in a 19‑14 loss to the Vodafone Fiji 7s in their semifinal yesterday, including the winning try to Masivesi Dakuwaqa with one minute to go.
Waldrom says he was frustrated with inconsistency and a little bit of discipline which let them down.
He adds that this has become a big area in the game and yellow cards and penalties are costing teams crucial games which also cost Fiji the Las Vegas 7s final.
Waldrom believes South Africa have the least amount of penalties against them and they have set the benchmark for other teams to tidy things up.
New Zealand is in Pool D with Canada, Russia and Scotland in the Vancouver 7s this weekend.
