The New Zealand 7s team created history at AT&T Park in San Francisco today with their 33‑12 victory over England making them not only the first nation to win back‑to‑back Rugby World Cup Sevens titles but also the first to lift the Melrose Cup on three occasions.

The victory also ensured that just as in Moscow five years ago, New Zealand completed the double with the Black Ferns Sevens having won the women’s crown yesterday.

Player of the final Scott Curry says this has been about team work.

England were hugely impressive in beating South Africa 29‑7 before New Zealand saw off Fiji 22‑17 in their respective semi‑final fixtures.

South Africa beat the Fiji Airways Men’s 7s team 24‑19 to take the Bronze while fifth place was claimed by Argentina, who beat USA 33‑7 to that spot.

Scotland overcame France 29‑24 in extra‑time to seal seventh place while Ireland impressed in beating Australia to the Challenge Trophy.
