A powerful First Nations and Pasifika side came close to a stunning upset against the British and Irish Lions, falling just short 24-19 after a fiercely contested encounter at Marvel Stadium in Melbourne.

The combined team, representing Indigenous Australian and Pacific Island heritage, showed immense heart and physicality, coming back from 14 points down to level the scores by halftime and pushing the Lions all the way to the final whistle.

After the Lions surged to an early 14-0 lead through Jamie Osborne and Darcy Graham, First Nations and Pasifika responded in emphatic fashion.

Wing Triston Reilly sparked the comeback with a blistering try, before flanker Seru Uru powered over to tie the match 14-14 at the break.

Their aggressive defence and relentless forward play unsettled the Lions, who had looked in control early on.

Even after Osborne’s second try and a score in the corner by Duhan van der Merwe, the underdogs kept coming.

With 10 minutes to go, Rob Leota crashed over following sustained pressure to bring the score to 24-19, but the conversion attempt was missed — a moment that ultimately kept the Lions ahead.

Despite the narrow defeat, First Nations and Pasifika earned praise for their intensity, pride, and attacking flair, putting the Lions under more pressure than any other team on tour so far.

The performance also sparked fresh calls for greater inclusion and visibility of First Nations and Pasifika talent in top-tier international rugby.

The Lions play the Wallabies in their second Test at 10pm Saturday at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.
